Why a Doula?

how a Doula can serve you

A doula is someone who provides support to you at the crucial moments of transitioning into parenthood, from pregnancy to the period of time following the birth of your baby. Having the support of a doula during your journey can help transform uncertainties into confidence. With the formal training on what to expect throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, a doula is equipped with the knowledge to help resource you, provide education, empower and support you in your process. A doula’s assistance comes in the form of mental, emotional, and physical support for the birthing parent. Support and education extends to those who will be a part of your birthing team, and/or your immediate community that will be helping during the postpartum period.

What a Doula isn’t

Your doula is not there to push or make decisions for you. While your doula can remind you of your initial goals and desired trajectory, it is not a doula’s role to speak on your behalf. Doulas can be very knowledgeable about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. However, a doula is not there to provide medical advice or any clinical opinions. A doula is there to support you and your support team, but is not intended to replace these key members of your circle. Your doula is not a babysitter, although support in childcare is an aspect of a postpartum doula’s role.
